Inventory of the Intangible Heritage of Campania

The Regione Campania has established the Inventory of Campania's Intangible Cultural Heritage (IPIC). The Inventory catalogues the intangible cultural heritage and traditional practices connected to the traditions, knowledge, practices, and know-how of the Campania community, as defined by the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of October 17, 2003, ratified by Italy with Law No. 167/2007.

By "intangible cultural heritage," we mean the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, know-how, social uses, collective festivities (including religious ones), and instruments, objects, manufactures, and cultural spaces associated with them. These communities recognize these elements as part of Campania's cultural heritage and pass them on from generation to generation. They are constantly recreated in response to their environment, their interaction with nature, and their history. This sense of identity and continuity is promoted by respecting cultural diversity and human creativity.

Practices registered with IPIC are enclosed in the Catalogue of Campania's Intangible Heritage.

The Campania Region has established the Inventory of Campanian Intangible Cultural Heritage (IPIC). The Inventory catalogues intangible cultural heritage and traditional practices connected to the traditions, knowledge, practices, and know-how of the Campanian community, as defined by the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of 17 October 2003, ratified by Italy with Law No. 167/2007.

“Intangible cultural heritage” refers to practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, know-how, social customs, rites and collective festive events, including those of a religious nature, as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts, and cultural spaces associated with them, which communities recognize as part of Campania’s cultural heritage. These elements are transmitted from generation to generation and are constantly recreated in response to their environment, their interaction with nature, and their history, providing a sense of identity and continuity and thereby promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.

Applicants seeking to register a cultural element in the IPIC must demonstrate, among other requirements, the historical continuity of the cultural element, whose practice must be documented for at least 50 years prior to the application; the persistence of social values and cultural meanings linked to the identity value of the cultural element; the continuity of formal and informal transmission processes; the involvement of younger generations; respect for gender equality in access to the cultural element; and the active participation of the reference community in implementing safeguarding and enhancement actions. The establishment of the Inventory constitutes an action aimed at safeguarding and promoting the Region’s cultural foundations, which might otherwise risk being forgotten or lost.

The practices registered in the IPIC are compiled in the Catalogue of Campania’s Intangible Heritage.

The Campania Region presents the second edition of the Review of Campania’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, taking place from 5 to 7 December at the NEXT – Nuova Esposizione Ex Tabacchificio in Capaccio Paestum (SA). An event designed to explore, through exhibition stands, round tables, tastings, and workshops, Campania’s intangible cultural heritage and its traditional practices connected to knowledge (artistic and craft productions), celebrations (rites and festivals), expressions (music, forms of expression, artistic performances), and agri-food culture (rural, gastronomic, and winemaking practices).

Organised and funded by the Campania Region, through Scabec – Società Campana Beni Culturali, the Review features masterclasses and meetings dedicated to the elements already registered in the Inventory of Campania’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (IPIC), established to identify and catalogue intangible cultural heritage and traditional practices connected to the knowledge, practices, and know-how of Campanian communities, as defined by the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of 17 October 2003.

During the three days of the Review, workshops will focus on coffee, bread, and straw, traditional Campanian dances, and the Neapolitan nativity scene, including the creation of artistic panels following the tradition of the Infiorata for Corpus Domini in Sant’Agata dei Goti, as well as the traditional torches used for the Luminaria di San Domenico in Praiano. The programme also includes demonstrations and artistic performances, offering the chance to experience the charm of, among others, the Pagani Carnival, the Masks of Castel Morrone, Neapolitan and Cilentan Song, the Feast of the Madonna delle Galline in Pagani, and the Zeza of Mercogliano.

This second edition also aims to highlight the work of the Regional IPIC Committee, which since 2017 has carried out an important evaluation process of submitted dossiers, reaching today a total of 124 intangible elements and values registered in the regional Catalogue.
