Singing, playing and walking

Music in Sacred Places

The project, entitled Singing, Playing and Walking, is an educational initiative born out of an agreement between the Archiepiscopal Curia of Naples and the Campania Region. Its dual purpose is to promote music among young people and, through it, create an opportunity for cultural and social growth.
The project is inspired by Cardinal Sepe's pastoral letter and a phrase from St. Augustine.

Three hundred and fifty young people, aged between eight and fifteen, were selected through the parishes of the neighborhoods with high levels of educational poverty in Naples and the municipalities of Afragola, Torre del Greco, and Ercolano, where youth disaffection appears to be on the rise and the context shows elements of risk.

The "Fare Chiesa e Città" Foundation, established by the Cardinal, is responsible for the scientific and pedagogical aspects of the project. The company Scabec SpA, identified by the Region, will implement the project in its entirety, coordinating organizational aspects and providing tutoring and monitoring services for the training course and promotional activities.

The bands are based at:

  • Parish of Santa Caterina a Formiello, Porta Capuana
  • Parish of Santa Maria della Misericordia a Porta Grande, Capodimonte
  • Parish of Maria Santissima del Buon Rimedio, Scampia
  • Parish of St. Anthony of Padua, Barra
  • Parish of St. Joseph and Our Lady of Lourdes, San Giovanni a Teduccio
  • Parish of St. Michael Archangel, Afragola (Salicelle)
  • Parish of Santa Maria del Popolo, Torre del Greco-Ercolano

Since 2017, the 7 bands have been joined as an eighth band by that of the Bartolo Longo Educational Centre of the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary in Pompeii, which also takes care of the project's social research.

The boys were selected according to a predisposition for music and aptitude for band instruments. Each one of them, through the teachers, educators, organisers and parish priests who follow them, has been given musical instruments and is taking part in the learning process, aimed at organising concerts and events in areas or locations of high historical, artistic and cultural value.

The most relevant initiatives include:

  • the first public event at the San Carlo Theatre in Naples;
  • the concert at the Rotonda Diaz for Pope Francis' visit to Naples in spring 2015;
  • the celebrations in music for San Gennaro at Naples Cathedral;
  • the guided tours of the Renzo Arbore exhibition at the Royal Palace in Naples;
  • participation in the 100th anniversary of the Scarlatti Association and the exhibition ‘Naples, uninterrupted music’.
    Participation in the Nave del Cuore (Ship of the Heart) and the Festival of Peace in Pompeii; guided tours of Campania's museums and archaeological sites; twinnings with orchestras in the sacred places of Naples; Football Leader event on the occasion of the 2019 Mini-Universiade and events at the Stadio San Paolo; public performances at the Complesso Monumentale Donnaregina - Diocesan Museum of Naples. The stations of art, the Astronomical Observatory, and the Real Bosco di Capodimonte are among the attractions.

In light of the ongoing challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the project has continued to operate on a regular basis from a distance, with the utmost priority placed on the safety of all participants. To this end, the project's activities have been successfully transferred to the web, thanks to the invaluable support of Progetto Sonora in the field of educational coordination.
The "Canta, suona e cammina" project is designed to enhance knowledge and appreciation of both classical and popular music, as well as the Neapolitan tradition, through visits to the city's most notable cultural and historical sites.

The initiative is funded by the Campania Region under the Poc Campania 2014-2020 program.
