Museo civico "Don Nicola Gambino"

The local civic museum is conveniently located in the center of a charming medieval village, with the remains of an ancient fortress, known as the "Donjon," providing a striking backdrop. Archaeological research has yielded a significant number of artifacts, including ceramics, metal, glass, wood, bone, terracotta, and stone. The collection includes 13 metal objects (pins, knives, nails, horseshoes, tools, and various utensils), three glass fragments, one wooden artefact, two worked bone objects, three spindles, four pipes, a fireplace pedestal with anthropomorphic figuration in limestone, a fragment of the twin pedestal of the previous one, and some stone corbels and projectiles, six coins, approximately 150 ceramic artefacts of common use and tableware, plus some bricks and the bust (small in size) of a saint.

The selection of fictile material (carried out according to criteria of representativeness of the identified classes) concerned the 450 finds that were subject to restoration. The laboratory work involved the recomposition of 168 objects from the 12th-13th centuries. These objects bear witness to the transparent and monochrome glazed ware that preceded the production of painted glazed ware and protomaiolica by a few decades. Among the green monochrome glazed vessels, the pitals and micro jars (used for spices) stand out. Painted glazed and protomaiolica ceramics are used for fine tableware. The cups, bowls, and jugs (found in fragments) belonging to this latter class (13th-14th century) feature geometric, vegetal, or animal motifs painted in brown, green, and yellow on the stanniferous glaze layer covering the biscuit. The open forms are coated only on the interior. In closed shapes, the ornamentation is applied to the exterior, while the interior is typically finished with a transparent glaze. Common and tableware use; in numerous cases, static and reconstructive additions have been made.
