Museo
The MEG contains an educational trail dedicated to the history of food and wine, as well as scientific studies related to food products and biotechnology. The museum is situated within Palazzo Cutillo, a historic edifice erected in 1826 at the core of the old town. It houses an exceptional assortment of food labels dating from the late 19th century to the present era.
The museum project primarily focuses on the industrialisation of food production, encompassing topics such as mechanisation, standardisation, and advertising. It concludes on the cusp of a new era, that of biotechnological food.
The museum offers visitors the opportunity to trace an itinerary linked to the typical products of the inland areas of Southern Italy, supported by a wealth of documentation. In order to safeguard the integrity of traditional products, the MEG has established a dedicated section on the subject of 'fake food', which is curated by the University of Salerno Museum. The exhibition elucidates the falsifications of food raw materials, finished food products and commonly consumed beverages. By undertaking the ‘lunch of horrors’ (a food education trail), one can gain insight into the falsifications of the most basic food products (bread, pasta, flour, etc.) and uncover the potential risks associated with them.
Since its inception, the Museum has served as a vital institution for research, study, and scientific inquiry, while also playing a pivotal role in the dissemination of food culture and its advocacy. The museum's didactic routes, its collection of rare and original pieces, and its section dedicated to scientific research collectively position it as an important centre for food and wine education.
In its current iteration, the Museum functions as a cultural repository and a forum for discourse between scientific culture and the general public. It offers a range of activities, including guided tours of its collections, scientific events, special projects, exhibitions, theatrical performances, conferences, conventions, concerts, training courses, and days and evenings dedicated to institutions, companies, and citizens.
