Complesso monumentale di Santa Chiara

The Monumental Complex of St Clare, comprising Church, Monastery and Convent, was constructed between 1310 and 1328 at the behest of the monarchs Robert of Anjou and Sancia of Majorca.
The monarchs, both devoted to St Francis of Assisi and St Clare, sought to construct a Franciscan stronghold to accommodate the Poor Clares in the monastery and the Friars Minor in the neighbouring convent. The church, the central nucleus of the entire complex, was established under the designation of Ostia Santa or Sacres Christ Body dedication, as proposed by the Eucharistic miracle of Bolsena in 1264. The aforementioned denomination was soon changed to Santa Chiara, likely due to the considerable number of Poor Clares residing in the monastery.
