Monumento
The Arch of Trajan in Benevento is one of the most important monuments of the Roman artistic production, built in a very prominent position on the hillside that descends to the Calore river.
The rich ornamentation celebrates, on the side facing the countryside, Trajan's exploits in the conquered provinces and, on the side facing the city, scenes of peace and the emperor's gifts in Italy.
Careful restoration work, completed in 2002 by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici, has restored the sculpted surfaces of the arch to their original splendour.
In the nearby Church of Sant'Ilario, you can visit the "Arch Museum", a multimedia installation that recalls the life and deeds of the Emperor Trajan through the arch's reliefs.
